Denis Shapovalov took to Twitter to announce that he proposed to his long-time girlfriend Mirjam Bjorklund. Shapovalov and Bjorklund, both 24 and pro tennis players, started their relationship in 2019. Now, Shapovalov and Bjorklund are engaged after the Swedish WTA player said yes to the Canadian tennis star's engagement proposal. The proposal took place in Bjorklund's home country, Sweden. After competing in Bastad last week, Bjorklund stayed in the city, where Shapovalov decided to propose to her.

Shapovalov on how Bjorklund impacts his life

Earlier this year, Shapovalov explained how he feels around Bjorklund and how she impacts his life.

“I think a big part of that is obviously Mirjam [Bjorklund], my girlfriend. First of all we’ve just been able to spend a lot more time together and do fun stuff. I feel like wherever we are, we always think of fun things to do, things to see and restaurants and stuff like that to go to. I just feel like life is super fun. I’m enjoying it a lot, being by her side. I think she’s an amazing person and she makes me very happy. Not much more you can ask for," Shapovalov told the ATP website in March.

Meanwhile, Shapovalov hasn't competed since Wimbledon, while Bjorklund suffered a round-of-16 loss in Bastad last week. At Wimbledon, Shapovalov was beaten by Roman Safiullin in the round-of-16. Shapovalov was up by a set against Safiullin before his ongoing knee injury started to cause him problems and the Canadian ended up losing in four sets. After the match, Shapovalov hinted he could take a break to address the issue.

Yeah, need to talk with the team. Need to try to see some more specialists and see what I can do.

"So maybe it is a good time to take a break, try to fix this, and come back for the fall. But then again, I would be missing an important part of the season which I love to play, which is in North America. So yeah, it's tough, but unfortunately that's our life (smiling)," Shapovalov said.
