Karolina Muchova was the first player to reach the women’s singles final at 2023 Roland Garros. The Czech shocked second seed Aryna Sabalenka 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 7-5 in a highly-qualitative and entertaining semi-final on Thursday. The 43rd-ranked Muchova needed three hours and 13 minutes to win.

Both players started the match with some impressive shot-making with interjections of errors in them. In the first set, Sabalenka was the first to get break points but Muchova was the first to secure a break. However, with Muchova serving for the set in the 10th game, Sabalenka secured the break back and the set had to be decided by a tie-break. Muchova once again lead 4-2 in the tie-break but Sabalenka kept catching up to her. Finally, Muchova captured the set on her first set point at 6-5 in the tie-break.

The pair traded two breaks of serve in the second set in the regulation time before another tie-break came into play to decide the outcome or the set and possibly, the match. This time around, Sabalenka kept her nerves in control before pocketing the set as her opponent had done, on the first set point she had at 6-5 in the tie-break.

The third set looked like it would head in Sabalenka’s favour as the 25-year-old secured a break in the sixth game and then consolidated the break for a 5-2 lead. Serving to stay in the match in the eighth game, Muchova faced a match point but a winner off her racquet erased that chance for Sabalenka. After that point, the 26-year-old never looked back in the match. Sabalenka didn’t even get to another match point as she served for the match and dropped her serve. In the 11th game, she failed to hold her serve after having two game points to go up 6-5 in the set. In contrast, after securing the break and when serving for the match, Muchova brought up three match points for herself and converted on the first of these three on the back of an error from Sabalenka.

Roland Garros: Aryna Sabalenka's shanks, Karolina Muchova's gets

Both players tried to outhit the other. Muchova especially was better in succeeding in doing so as she kept angling her shots into the corners at the baseline. While trying to get to these, Sabalenka invariably had to leave the court open and Muchova was able to hit convenient winners for herself. In trying to prevent Muchova to get to hit the shots she wanted, Sabalenka tried to overplay and ended up coughing more errors for herself.

Sabalenka finished the match with 53 winners, 26 more than her opponent’s 27. She had 44 errors to the Czech’s 37. The Roland Garros semi-final was the first match at a Major that Aryna Sabalenka’s lost in 2023. She was entering the match on a run of 11-matches. Meanwhile, for Karolina Muchova, this is a career first Slam final. She now will face either Iga Swiatek or 14th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia.
