Carlos Alcaraz was thrilled after delivering "an amazing tennis" against Alexander Zverev during their Madrid Masters round-of-16 match.
Alcaraz, the defending Madrid champion, destroyed No 13 seed Zverev 6-1 6-2.
Last year, Alcaraz won his first Madrid title after dismantling Zverev in the final 6-3 6-1.
“For me it’s amazing to play the level that I played today. It’s been a question mark for me. I played well, I feel really good right now and this match gives me a lot of confidence. At the beginning [I felt nerves], but you have to handle [them]. The best players in the world handle the nerves really [well] and I want to be like them. Trying not to show the opponent that I’m nervous at all. I just want to enjoy playing here in the Caja Magica in front of my home crowd. It’s been amazing for me to play here, so I just enjoy every moment," Alcaraz said, per the ATP website.
Alcaraz gave no chance to ZverevAlcaraz made a quick start to the match, breaking Zverev in the second game and serving out the next game for a 3-0 lead.
After losing the first three games of the match, Zverev served out the fourth game to finally get on the board and cut the deficit to 3-1.
However, it didn't change much as Alcaraz broke Zverev again in the sixth game for a 5-1 lead before serving out for the first set in the following game.
After easily losing the first set, Zverev saved a break point in the third game and managed to hold his first two service games for a 2-1 lead.
Then, Alcaraz went on a major run as the Spaniard claimed back-to-back breaks in the fifth and seventh games to win five games in a row and complete a straight-set win over Zverev.
Alcaraz plays against Karen Khachanov next.
“I will try to play this level. I will say this is my best level. I have to show that in the quarter-final, but obviously playing this match gives me a lot of confidence. Let’s see what happens," Alcaraz said.
