University of Arizona men's tennis team played against Florida Atlantic University and the University of Texas at Austin at UT's Weller Tennis Center. University of Arizona beat Florida but lost to Texas. Now, Arizona will be back in action in Tucson on Friday at 12:00. against Pepperdine University.
Wildcats played against the FAU Owl. Doubles duos Colton Smith and Jay Friend, along with Gustaf Strom and Eric Padgham both won their doubles points to secure a 1-0 lead. By finishing first in the singles competition, Herman Hoeyeraal secured his first singles point over FAU's Joao Graca, winning his matches 6-3 and 6-4. Following the Hoeyeraal victory, Smith and Strom both won their games by equal scores of 6-1, 6-4. With the Wildcats putting in a dominant performance in the singles competition, they secured a 4-0 game win.
For the second round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Austin, the Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season to the Texas Longhorns. Texas men's tennis is a top contender for the NCAA title. Doubles pairs Jonas Ziverts and Hoeyeraal, and Smith and Friend lost their games to give Texas the doubles point. Arizona tried to fight back, but the Longhorns were great.
Siem Woldeab of Texas beat Hoeyeraal in the first game out of the court in singles with a score of 7-6 (7-5) to 6-3. After that game, Cleeve Harper extended Texas' lead over Arizona with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Friend during the fifth singles game. Strom was the last loss to secure a 4-0 Texas lead over the Wildcats. No. 6 Texas secured its bid to the ITA National Tennis Team Indoor Championships for the fifth straight year.
