In the early hours of Monday, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria. According to the latest reports, the death toll in Turkey has skyrocketed to 5,894. In Syria, 1,932 have tragically lost their lives. Unfortunately, the death toll is feared to exceed 20,000. "Lord, protect the people and give them health (praying emoji)," Djokovic captioned his Instagram Story. On Tuesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a state of emergency in the quake-hit areas. "We have decided to declare a state of emergency to ensure that the operations are carried out quickly. We are facing one of the biggest catastrophes not only in the history of the Turkish republic, but also in our geography and in the world," Erdogan said in a statement. More than 7,000 people have been rescued from the rubble. "Every minute, every hour that passes, the chances of finding survivors alive decrease. The figures do not tell us about the dangerous situation that many families now face, who have lost everything [and] are forced to sleep at out in the open in the dead of winter," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization. The tragic scenes from Turkey and Syria are absolutely devastating. For two days now, rescue teams from all over the world have been going to Turkey and Syria to provide aid and assistance. Djokovic is known for being a person always willing to make charitable donations. Novak Djokovic is recovering from his conquest at the Australian Open, a tournament in which he suffered a three-centimeter tear in his left leg, tournament director Craig Tiley reported. The Serbian will compete again at the ATP 500 in Dubai which is played at the end of this month.
