Holger Rune admits he is a bit concerned about his wrist injury after he was forced to retire injured in Rotterdam this week.

On Thursday, Rune was 6-4 4-0 down to 160th-ranked Gijs Brouwer when he decided to retire their Rotterdam round-of-16 match.

"I'll have to look into it. I have to get it checked again, because of course it shouldn't continue to hurt when you're my age," Rune told TV 2 Sport.

The same injury plagued Rune at the Australian Open, who managed to beat Ugo Humbert in the third round before losing to Andrey Rublev in the round-of-16.

"I have played through some pain, but today it hurt more and more as the match progressed, and in the end it hurt too much. I tried all possible methods to make it work," Rune explained.

Rune pulled out of Marseille

After retiring injured in Rotterdam, Rune decided not to play in Marseille.

Rune, 19, was scheduled to make his second Marseille appearance this year.

Last year, Rune debuted in Marseille as he made the round-of-16 before losing to Aslan Karatsev.

So far in 2023, Rune has appeared in four tournaments and he also represented Denmark in their Davis Cup tie against India.

Rune kicked off his 2023 season at the Adelaide International 1, where he suffered a shock first-round defeat to Yoshihito Nishioka.

After a disappointing Adelaide run, Rune was able to make a positive start to his Australian Open campaign and win his first three matches in straight sets to comfortably progress into the round-of-16.

But then in the round-of-16, Rune missed out on a great chance to beat Rublev.

In the fifth set, Rune had a 5-2 set lead and it appeared that he would close out the match.

But then, Rune failed to serve out for the match and also missed out on two match points in the 12th game of the set.

In the end, Rublev ended up edging out Rune 6-3 3-6 6-3 4-6 7-6 (9).

After the Australian Open, Rune won both of his Davis Cup matches and also reached the Montpellier semifinal.
