Menorca and its only one course golf course

Only one course on the island does not prevent Menorca from welcoming golfers looking for something else, to pleasantly combine relaxation and sporting activities, in a white-blue-green setting.

The Balearic Islands form an archipelago of multi-faceted islands. On the one hand, the island of Palma de Mallorca, the big one, the one that takes all the light with its neighbors Ibiza and Formentera, and on the other, Menorca whose only common point is the beauty of the landscapes.

Menorca, golf

But, for everything else, Menorca is an island apart. Wild and proud, it will always remain Mallorca's little sister but has managed - and this is not its least merit - to preserve its identity. If Majorca has more than 20 courses that attract golfers from all over Europe, Minorca boasts a single 18-hole course, designed by the great English architect Dave Thomas all the same, and claims it.

Five times smaller than Mallorca, the island of Menorca – 700 km² – could have built other courses – the projects exist or have existed – but the time does not seem to have come to sacrifice fashion, with all that entails abuses, excesses, particularly in terms of real estate. Very few hotels, many villas or apartments and a clientele less attracted by the “bling bling” like that of Mallorca or Ibiza.

The bias is primarily environmental: the priorities have been set for a few years already, exactly in 1993 when UNESCO classified the island as a “Biosphere Reserve” because of its wide variety of natural habitats. Ravines, caves, wetlands, islets, dune systems and beaches constitute systems where a large number of species inhabit, some of which are endemic. The intrinsic beauty of the island has thus been preserved: today more than 60% of its area remains intact. While everyone is looking for solutions to deal with climate change – and Menorca was not spared either during the summer of 2022 – the risk of real estate fever remains, however.

France, which occupied the island for a very short period in the 19th century, is making a strong comeback with some spectacular projects by private investors, particularly in agro-tourism which, with the help of millions, have put back in the saddle often neglected infrastructures, linking environmental quality to an often very successful building. The Minorcans are also quite divided on this new conquest, they who see the prices soar every day. They only forget that they somehow abandoned their island at a certain time, leaving the English to completely control this little treasure planted in the middle of the Mediterranean with a massive presence which today does not deny itself, even if Brexit makes more than one hesitate…

The only golf course in Menorca, Son Parc, is located in the northeast of the island, less than a kilometer from the sea: we obviously owe it to our British friends who are still the main clientele of golfers, in any case the most visible…

Still, this course of Son Parc is not lacking in attractions and it is its particular story that we are going to tell you now. No club, no sports association, nothing, only a course made available to players who pay an annual fee or a green fee. Operation could not be simpler, suitable for everyone, especially since the reception is always impeccable thanks to its Director, Paola Ferroni, Italian of origin, in place since 2006 and who holds the helm perfectly, with Gustavo, the club pro. At Son Parc, we know how to do everything, the products offered are limited but well chosen and this is all the more important since the offer on the island, which is limited to the Decathlon distributor, is not of great interest unfortunately it is necessary say it well.

On the environmental side, a particularly delicate and topical issue today, His Park is a model since all the water on the course originates in the wastewater treated for a long time by the treatment plant and in the water rain of course... When you think that in France, only 10% of wastewater is recycled by golf courses, you say to yourself that there are significant margins that can be found...
