Lleyton Hewitt fuming at Nick Kyrgios: Responding, that's the normal way of doing it

Australian United Cup team co-captain Lleyton Hewitt didn't seem to be too impressed with Nick Kyrgios' late United Cup withdrawal as he noted that he wants the 27-year-old to communicate better certain things.

On Wednesday - just hours before the start of the inaugural United Cup in Australia - top-ranked Australian male tennis player Kyrgios withdrew from the tournament due to an ankle injury. 

Shortly after Kyrgios announced his withdrawal, Australian team members appeared to be blindsided by that move. 

“I was in the same boat as all the other players yesterday, so I didn’t know any more. It was pretty tough for everyone. If it was just Nick [that his decision affected], that’s one thing, but when it revolves around the team and other people and I guess their preparation for, you know, they want to be playing as well as they possibly can, not just in this event but also leading into the Australian Open, so, yeah, that’s probably the hardest thing," Hewitt said, as quoted on Tennis Majors.

Hewitt suggests he would like Kyrgios to give quicker responses

During his press conference, Hewitt was asked how he could improve communication with Kyrgios. 

Hewitt suggested that he messaged Kyrgios and received a slow response. 

"Probably just responding. That’s the normal way of doing it. There was a little while (before he responded). It’s more just the communication. If it was just worrying Nick, that’s one thing," Hewitt explained. 

After Kyrgios withdrew from the United Cup, Alex de Minaur moved into the slot as the top-ranked Australian male player.

Kyrgios, who was scheduled to meet Cameron Norrie at the United Cup on Thursday, was replaced by de Minaur.

Unfortunately for the Australians, de Minaur didn't do well against Norrie as the Briton claimed a 6-3 6-3 win over the Australian.

Meanwhile, Kyrgios has reportedly switched his focus on being fully fit for the Australian Open.
