Despite sophisticated training plans, every ATP Tour player has a very simple goal for their game: to make progress every day whenever they hit the court or hit the gym. The four players nominated for Most Improved Player of the Year at the 2022 ATP Awards achieved that goal above most, with climbs in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings attesting to that improvement. This year's nominees for the award are: Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune, Jack Draper and Maxime Cressy. The winner will be announced throughout this month. Considered a star in the making after his strong finish to 2021 - where he reached the quarterfinals and lifted the Intesa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals title - Alcaraz had expectations to live up to this season. The Spaniard did not limit himself to fulfilling them but he overflowed them in record time. After winning the first of his five titles of the year in Rio de Janeiro to break into the Top 20, Alcaraz showed that he could perform on the biggest stages by capturing his first ATP Masters 1000 trophy in Miami after reaching the semifinals at Indian Wells. The Murcian led the show against his compatriots, achieving the double in Barcelona and Madrid, beating Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev consecutively in the Spanish capital. His continued successes put Alcaraz in a position to reach the top of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings at the US Open. The Spaniard seized the opportunity with aplomb to become the youngest No. 1 since the ranking's inception in 1973. "For me, to be world No. 1 and a Grand Slam champion is a dream come true," Alcaraz said after winning the US Open. At the beginning of the season I didn't think about having the year I'm having," he said. "I've always believed in my team and in my work. This is something that has come with a lot of daily effort, with the tough pre-season we did and the year's work with my team."

Carlos Alcaraz praises Iga Swiatek

Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek have endured a standout season in 2022. “I see her year has been incredible, she broke a record I think for the longest winning streak (this century). It’s amazing,” Alcaraz said of Swiatek. “I wish to be like her, to not lose the No. 1. But I think it’s almost impossible. I’m going to lose it but the point is to recover it and stay there at No. 1 as much as I can," Carlos Alcaraz expressed.
