World No 1 Carlos Alcaraz intends to put in additional hours on the practice court as he has confirmed that he is only playing the Kooyong Classic leading up to the Australian Open.

Alcaraz, 19, won't be competing in any official tournaments leading up to the first Grand Slam of the season.

Instead, Alcaraz will just appear at the Kooyong Classic, an exhibition tournament that will be taking place from 10-12 January.

"I decided to sacrifice the tournaments from the start of the year to focus on the big one. That's why I'm just playing Kooyong. The focus is on getting better and be ready," Alcaraz said, per Jose Morgado.

Alcaraz leads a star-studded Kooyong player field

The Kooyong Classic is set to feature some of the biggest names of the game as Jannik Sinner, Taylor Fritz, Borna Coric, Marin Cilic, Yoshihito Nishioka and Alex de Minaur.

The Kooyong Classic is a well-known exhibition tournament, where many great champions have played leading up to the Australian Open.

Due to the pandemic, the Kooyong Classic didn't take place in 2021 and 2022.

Now, the tournament is returning and everything is set for a great tournament edition.

“Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club is the spiritual home of tennis in Australia. It is extremely important to the club to retain an event featuring the world’s best male and female players competing and experiencing the club. We are delighted to welcome CareA2+ as our title sponsor and partner and look forward to working with them, together with Mediapro Asia, over the next five years and beyond," Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club President Adam Cossar said.

Meanwhile, Alcaraz will be hoping to use Kooyong as a good preparation for the Australian Open.

In Melbourne, Alcaraz will be targeting to win his second Grand Slam title.

Recently, Alcaraz said he is happy about the fact that Novak Djokovic is allowed to compete at the Australian Open.

It will be interesting to see if we will see a first Alcaraz and Djokovic Grand Slam match in Melbourne.
