Carlos Alcaraz proved to be a predestined player. The young Spaniard, who beat Stefanos Tsitsipas at the 2021 US Open, literally exploded in 2022 by winning the US Open and becoming the youngest No. 1 in men's tennis history. The 19-year-old from Murcia reinforced his season by also winning two Masters 1000 (Miami and Madrid) and as many ATP 500 (Rio and Barcelona). Juan Carlos Ferrero's protégé has left everyone speechless this year, even seizing the opportunity to beat two hallowed monsters in Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic (during the Mutua Madrid Open). 'Carlitos' performance dropped slightly in the last part of the season, also due to some injuries. The Iberian had to miss the ATP Finals in Turin and the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga due to an abdominal distension. Despite having resumed training just a few weeks ago, Alcaraz participated in the Abu Dhabi exhibition. The ATP number 1 showed that his condition was still not optimal, suffering two crushing defeats at the hands of Andrey Rublev and Casper Ruud. Alcaraz will not participate in any official tournament before the 2023 Australian Open, which will be held at Melbourne Park from January 16 to 29. Carlos will only participate in the "Kooyong Classic", the exhibition that will be held from January 10 to 12. "I decided to sacrifice the tournaments at the beginning of the year to get to the Australian Open in perfect shape," confides Alcaraz. "That's why I will only play the Kooyong Classic. I will work hard to improve my condition and be ready for the first Slam of the season," added the Spaniard. In an interview with "Sky Sport Germany", Patrick Kuhnen -former ATP number 43 and current director of the Munich tournament- analyzed Carlos Alcaraz's prospects in detail: "The Spaniard will start the new season as number 1 in the world and will have to defend this status."

Alcaraz had a successful 2022 season

Alex Molcan compared his experiences of playing against Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. "Alcaraz is playing so fast, it's incredible," Alex Molcan recently said on the ATP Tennis Radio Podcast. "He's playing crazy aggressive. He's fit, he runs, he catches everything. Also Djokovic, he is also running incredibly. But they are different players. With Alcaraz, it was a tough match actually, it was really tough. Once you hit a short ball to his forehand, it's probably over. So that's different," he added. Carlos Alcaraz had a successful 2022 season, winning five titles and registering a 57-13 win-loss record.
