Rafael Nadal will cherish everything he has achieved in 2022, winning two major titles and missing the opportunity to become the world number 1 at the US Open. However, the 36-year-old is already thinking ahead to the 2023 season, in which he has suffered four straight losses since New York and in which he aims to be solid again in Australia in January. Rafa reached the ATP Finals after an early loss at the Paris Masters, hoping to improve his game and get some rhythm. Instead, the Spaniard is 0-2 in Turin this week after losing to Taylor Fritz and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Felix was the favorite against Rafa, beating a winner of 22 majors for the first time after a 6-3 6-4 win in one hour and 57 minutes. The Canadian fired 15 aces and defended all five break points to put pressure on his opponent. The Spaniard did his best to keep in touch, but could not keep up with his rival. Rafa dropped serve once in each set to propel the youngster over the finish line. Felix had a huge 31-16 advantage in service winners and built the win from him in the shortest range to four strokes. Nadal played better in the long rallies but couldn't keep it safe until at least one tie break. Auger-Aliassime dictated the pace with 29 winners and 23 unforced errors. Rafa failed to impose his serve or his forehand, ending the match with 12 winners and 19 unforced errors. Felix saved two break points in the first game of the encounter, and they remained level until 3-3. The Canadian faced another test in game seven when his volley went wide, offering the Spaniard two further break chances.
Carlos Moya defends NadalRafael Nadal's coach Carlos Moya believes that despite the injury struggles in recent months, his charge will be ready for the 2023 season. "He is willing to still keep evolving and being competitive, so as long as that happens and his body holds up well he will be ready," Moya said. "He will be ready for next year, he is motivated, he has proved he can still play well and be a contender to win big tournaments. He’s won two Slams, when you win two Slams in a year it’s always a good year, no matter what happens after that. He has been a bit unlucky with injuries, two bad injuries during the year, but he’s a great competitor and fighter, and we don’t give up and we still believe there is a chance to play well here," he stated.
