Former American tennis star Mardy Fish apologized to Novak Djokovic and said that "politics win again."

On Thursday, Djokovic withdrew from the US Open.

Djokovic, 35, hasn't been vaccinated against COVID-19 and he wasn't allowed to enter the United States as an unvaccinated foreigner.

Djokovic waited until the last moment, hoping there would be a change, but nothing happened.

"Politics win again. Sorry Champ @DjokerNole," Fish tweeted.

Djokovic thanked his fans, supporters

Over the last two months, Djokovic received lots of support, even from notable American politicians.

Several US senators called out the Joe Biden administration over the rule that eventually prevented Djokovic from competing at the US Open.

After withdrawing from the US Open, Djokovic noted that he noticed all the support and he was extremely grateful for that.

"Sadly, I will not be able to travel to NY this time for US Open," Djokovic announced on Thursday. "Thank you #NoleFam for your messages of love and support. Good luck to my fellow players! I’ll keep in good shape and positive spirit and wait for an opportunity to compete again. See you soon tennis world!"

Djokovic's withdrawal means that Rafael Nadal will enter the 2023 season as the record Grand Slam champion.

Nadal currently owns a record 22 Grand Slams, while Djokovic has 21 Grand Slams.

At the US Open, Djokovic is a three-time champion.

After his withdrawal was made official, the US Open organizers released a statement.

"Novak is a great champion and it is very unfortunate that he will be unable to compete at the 2022 US Open, as he is unable to enter the country due to the federal government's vaccination policy for non-US citizens. We look forward to welcoming Novak back at the 2023 US Open."

Djokovic has now been two months without action.

It remains to be seen when will Djokovic return to action.
