1976 French Open champion Adriano Panatta thinks Carlos Alcaraz may have a problem motivating himself for matches in which he is the absolute favorite.

Alcaraz, 19, has had a great season so far, winning two Masters titles and becoming the second youngest player to break into the top-5.

This season, Alcaraz has claimed several top-10 wins, most notably against Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

When Alcaraz plays a top player, it's a guarantee that he will deliver his best tennis.

On Sunday, Alcaraz suffered a surprise 6-4 6-7 (6) 6-4 loss to Lorenzo Musetti in the Hamburg final - in which he was clearly far from his best game.

"When he has a top player in front of him he gives his best and is really very strong, when instead he finds himself fighting against someone who on paper is not classified like him he almost seems to be offended," Panatta told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Alcaraz admitted he didn't play his best tennis

Alcaraz managed to force a third set after saving five championship points in the second set but failed to complete a big comeback win.

After the loss, Alcaraz admitted it was Musetti who deserved to claim the title.

“I think he deserved the win today. He played better than me, of course," Alcaraz admitted after the loss. "He was more aggressive all the time. I didn’t play my best, but I fought until the last ball and I’m really happy with that.”

Alcaraz was the absolute favorite in every match he played in Hamburg last week but his road to the final wasn't smoothest.

In the Hamburg first round, Alcaraz avoided a shock loss as he recovered from a set down to beat 250th-ranked Nicola Kuhn.

Alcaraz also had problems in his last-16 match versus Filip Krajinovic but still managed to win that match.

Alcaraz didn't play his best versus Musetti either but this time couldn't escape ending on the losing side.
