Novak Djokovic played only one tournament in 2022 due to the anti-Covid rules in Australia and the United States. The Serbian champion has decided not to get vaccinated and, after the intricate case in Melbourne, has taken on the responsibilities of choosing him.

The Serb took the court only in Dubai, where he left the tournament in the quarter-finals against an excellent Jiri Vesely. Djokovic will finally come back to play at the Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo and shouldn't have any problems at least until the Wimbledon tournament.

It is still unclear whether he will be able to travel to the United States to participate in the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati and the next edition of the US Open.

Despite the forced stop, Djokovic still managed to keep the top of the ranking. In fact, Daniil Medvedev lost the scepter after three weeks and at the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells and Miami he disappointed expectations. The Russian went out in the third round in California; while at the Miami Open he lost in the quarter-finals to reigning champion Hubert Hurkacz.

Medvedev will also have to remain stationary for at least a month and a half due to the operation he underwent last week. The 26-year-old from Moscow has announced that he will remain in the pits to undergo a minor surgery to correct a hernia.

Without considering the results of his rivals and excluding the candidates of Alexander Zverev and Rafael Nadal, the fate of the first position in the ranking will be all in Djokovic's hands. The Serbian champion will have the opportunity to confirm his leadership before the start of the Roland Garros by following a specific path, an arduous path but certainly within his reach.

Before returning to the court, Medvedev will lose at least 790 points; Djokovic, on the other hand, will neither defend 840. To maintain first place, therefore, the Serbian will have to push himself to the final at the Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome and defend the title he won in 2021 in Belgrade. It will not be easy to find the rhythm of the match immediately, but the Belgrade has accustomed the world of tennis to fantastic surprises.
