Garbine Muguruza: There is a lot at stake at this time of the year

World No. 9 Garbine Muguruza insisted she was disappointed she didn't get a chance to play former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in Chicago. 

Muguruza and Azarenka were scheduled to meet in the Chicago round-of-16 but the latter was forced to give a walkover due to an injury. 

Muguruza returned to the court on Friday and beat Mai Hontama 6-3 6-2 to reach the Chicago semifinal. 

"It was a somewhat strange match, yes. Yesterday I could not compete against Azarenka and that left me a very different feeling. I wanted to play that game to gain competitive rhythm and today it was a bit tricky match, because she is an unknown player who came from playing very well and today has I played a good game. I was impressed by how well the Japanese tennis player played and the way she entered the match. She made me sweat at certain moments of the match and I had to play my best tennis if I didn't want to see me in trouble," Muguruza said, per Punto de Break.

Muguruza aware it's an important part of the year

Former world No. 1 Muguruza is currently eighth on the Race to Shenzhen list.

"Ranking? I'm not one of the people who looks at that kind of thing a lot. I know there is a lot at stake at this time of year. I know there is the race and the ranking and I am aware of it. It is something that is always there but I do not try to obsess too much with it. It is something very common for all tennis players and that we have to know how to live together. Logically, I am not going to lie to you and I am not going to hide that I really want to do a good job in tournaments and try to score points in the rankings. But I don't want to be thinking about the ranking every day, far from it," Muguruza insisted.
