Ashleigh Barty and Elina Svitolina will clash for a place in the Porsche Grand Prix final on Saturday. The top-seed fended off sixth seed Karolina Pliskova in their semi-final on Friday while the Ukrainian saw off the seventh-seeded Petra Kvitova in their semi-final later in the day.

Barty fought back to claim a 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 win over the Czech. The latter served for the match in the 10th game of the third set but while she wasn’t able to make good on her lead, her lapse in focus allowed the Australian to collect her game and complete a turnaround in the match.

In her post-match press conference, Barty noted, “In a sense, it was probably a match of two sets. In the first set, I wasn't able to build any pressure. Kaja was getting in and out of her serving games too quickly, and in turn, was then having freedom on my service games. But being able to flip that switch right from the first game of the second set was important. To then make it more of a physical match was what we were after, and over time we were able to get the match back on my terms as much as we expected.”

The world no. 1’s semi-final opponent, Svitolina, too, needed to make a comeback victory of her own against Pliskova’s fellow Czech, Kvitova. The Ukrainian saved two match points before claiming a 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-2 to win her third straight match against the southpaw. This loss ended Kvitova’s six-match winning run in the tournament. Kvitova had won the 2019 edition of the tournament.

After her win, in her presser, Svitolina shared, “A big battle is always very satisfying, and you know that the hard work pays off. It’s always an unbelievable feeling to go through this kind of match.”

Meanwhile, in the bottom half of the Porsche Grand Prix draw, Aryna Sabalenka and Simona Halep have set up the semi-final. In their respective quarter-final, fifth-seeded Belarusian defeated Anett Kontaveit 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 while Halep claimed a 6-4, 6-1 win over Ekaterina Alexandrova.
