37 year old Kim Clijsters returned to the circuit in February after more than seven years away from the circuit and played two events before the tennis shutdown due to the pandemic. 21 year old American Sofia Kenin won her first Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open in January.

Clijsters is representing the New York Empire team while Kenin is competing for the Philadelphia Freedoms in the WTT. The Belgian won 14 of 15 first-serve points and hit four aces to win the set 5-3 as the New York Empires scored a 25-17 win over the Philadelphia Freedoms.

Speaking in her post-match interview, Clijsters said, "We knew it was going to be a tough battle out there today. I think we were a little bit extra focused and ready to take it from the beginning of each set. It was a great team effort.”

The Belgian said playing the mixed doubles earlier helped her as well.  She had teamed up with Neal Skupski to win 5-4 over Taylor Townsend and Fabrice Martin. “I think it helped me that I had the mixed doubles already. I was on point and able to return and serve in a match situation. I served really well today. I think that was the biggest difference.”

Clijsters improved to 2-0 with the win in this year's WTT in singles while Kenin is now 2-1 in singles in the event. Clijsters had made e a winning start to her 2020 World Team Tennis campaign with a 5-2 win over Washington Kastles' Bernarda Pera, who is ranked No. 60 in the world.

The 2020 World TeamTennis season is the 45th season of the league in the United States and includes nine teams with each team playing a 14-match regular-season schedule at one location. Kim Clijsters has been a world No. 1 in both singles and doubles and has won a total of six Grand Slam tournament titles, four in singles and two in doubles in her career. She has won 41 singles titles and 11 doubles titles on the WTA Tour. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2017. She was a three-time winner of the WTA Tour Championships. She has won the US Open and the Australian Open in singles and Wimbledon and the French Open in doubles.
