Former World No. 1 in doubles and seven-time Grand Slam winner Jamie Murray says he is planning another domestic tournament after the 'Battle of the Brits' event he had staged last month.
Jamie Murray plans Battle of the Brits Team TennisMurray says he plans to stage a new mixed team event at the end of July and hopes that all the top British players, including his brother Andy Murray and top-ranked British woman Johanna Konta, will compete.
Murray says, "We are in the process of setting up the Battle of the Brits Team Tennis, which will be a mixed team event to take place at the National Tennis Centre from July 27 to August 2. The concept is that there will be two teams of 10-12 players each, a mix of men and women. There will be matches each day, singles, doubles, mixed doubles. It will be Ryder Cup-style. We think it's a cool idea to get all the best British players together, competing in one event. We will continue to raise funds for charity during the week of competition.”
Scott Lloyd, LTA Chief Executive said, "Innovation is a key part of the LTA’s five year plan to grow tennis in this country and we are delighted to partner with Jamie on this exciting new team event, showcasing Britain’s best men’s and women’s players in a unique format. Over recent weeks, the LTA has been actively engaged with UK Sport and the Government in developing guidelines for behind closed doors events and we are pleased to be a partner and host of another tournament at the National Tennis Centre. We want to do all we can to support elite players during this period and keep tennis in the public eye over the summer.”
Murray added that the players in the teams and the selection criteria will depend upon which players make themselves available, which he said is also based on the resumption of the ATP & WTA circuit in early August. Some of the British players may travel outside the UK to compete in those events at that time. 'All the top players have shown great interest in playing. Basically it will be their last opportunity to compete before the Tour starts, whenever that will start up. I have had really good feedback about that.'
Dan Evans won the Battle of the Brits event beating Kyle Edmund in the final in the last week of June.
