Former Serbian tennis player Janko Tipsarevic hopes the Eastern European Championship will be a success and it will help players to get some matches and stay in shape during the Tour suspension.
Tipsarevic, a former world No. 8, came to the idea to launch the Eastern European Championship -- an event that will kick off June 15 and be held for six weeks at the Tipsarevic Academy.
"The idea came shortly after the cancellation of Indian Wells due to the coronavirus situation. At that time, I did not even assume that the situation would be such that we would talk about whether the US Open would be played at all. The idea arose for tennis to continue to live as a sport," Tipsarevic told Tanjug, as revealed on Sport Klub. "As Serbia fought well with the coronavirus in the early stages, we expanded the search for players from nearby countries and thanks to my contacts in the world of tennis, 90 percent of players from nearby countries said they wanted to compete. It was all on shaky ground then, but when the tournaments started to be cancelled, the players were just confirming their participation."
The Eastern European Championship will feature some well-known names as Nikoloz Basilashvili, Borna Coric and Damir Dzumhur have confirmed their participation.
As expected, there will be a number of Serbian players, most notably Dusan Lajovic, Miomir Kecmanovic, Laslo Djere and Viktor Troicki.
"I don't know how will this end, but also the confirmation of male names, I look at all this with reservations so that players don't think that I'm using their names to lure sponsors, audience... The way everything has been going with the coronavirus seems that it will all end fine, but we cannot know that. That is why we carefully and secretly reveal the names of the players who are expected to come to play. We live in a world where we don't know what will happen. When the tournament starts next week, I will have more information about the new names. My idea is just to play tennis. The better the players, the better for us as organizers, Belgrade, Serbia," Tipsarevic said.
Janko Tipsarevic happy about Novak Djokovic's projectWorld No. 1 Djokovic's wish to organize a Tour around Balkan is set to become a reality as the Adria Tour will take place across four Balkan countries from June 13 - July 5.
"If we look at the history of tennis in the past 10 years, where Serbia has had four players ranked at No. 1 - Nenad (Zimonjic), Ana (Ivanovic), Jelena (Jankovic), Novak, and also there are Viktor (Troicki), Dusan (Lajovic), Filip (Krajinovic) and others, I think this is nothing unrealistic. The other thing is that it was impossible to make a tournament like this during the regular season," Tipsarevic said.
Janko Tipsarevic called it a career at the end of the 2019 season.
