Roberto Bautista Agut leaves Spanish Davis Cup team

Spanish tennis star Roberto Bautista Agut has left the Spanish Davis Cup team due to personal reasons, it was announced on Thursday. 

Bautista Agut, ranked at No. 9 in the world, played in Spain's opening first two ties at the inaugural Davis Cup Finals against Russia and Croatia. 

The Spaniard was edged out by Russian Andrey Rublev on Tuesday but bounced back a day after with a straight-set win over Nikola Mektic of Croatia. 

Spain secured a quarterfinal place after a 2-1 win over Russia and a 3-0 win over Croatia but they will now have to do it all without their second top-ranked player Bautista Agut. 

Reportedly, 2019 Wimbledon semifinalist Bautista Agut made a decision to leave the team because his father is "very ill."

It comes just a year and a half after the 31-year-old Spaniard lost his mother, who died of a sudden death in May 2018. 

Pablo Carreno Busta, a four-time ATP champion and former world No. 10, is expected to replace Bautista Agut and feature in singles action for Spain.
