In a press conference Spain's Davis Cup team captain Sergi Bruguera explained why Rafael Nadal did not play the doubles match against the Russians Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev on Wednesday. Bruguera said: "I want him to be healthy, he needs to take care about his body. It was an unbelievable tie, all the matches were amazing, very balanced from the beginning to the end. The aggressive mentality of Spain stood out. In the beginning the idea was to make Rafa pair up with Marcel but in the end I also trust a lot all the guys I have like Marcel, Feli and Pablo Carreno Busta. It was a complicated decision. But ending at 12:30, with all the ties left, I cannot put Rafa for another match and end at 2:30 AM when tomorrow we have another one. I also have an amazing doubles pair as you could see. I fully trust them."
Marcel Granollers admitted that Roberto Bautista Agut's loss to Andrey Rublev was a shame: "It was very close but we all were very united. It was a complicated match emotionally, but we played a very solid match and we took advantage of the opportunities."
Feliciano López, who defeated Khachanov in doubles, said: "We were able to deal with pressure and even if they played well, we were smart trying to win the match. The times of the event are not the best ones and the matches could have even lasted longer. But there is no room for excuses. This competition has a very different format and you have to adapt because it depends sometimes on a set. I think everything is much more balanced and closer. Teams that are not favorites can cause an upset."
