Soderling: The only chance to beat Rafael Nadal is to play aggressive

In an interview as quoted by France 24, the former world no. 4 Robin Soderling commented on the keys of his 2009 French Open fourth-round win over Rafael Nadal. "I think to beat him on clay is challenging. But to beat him in five sets on clay is even more difficult. You have to play extremely well. To beat him on clay, the only chance for any player is to be really aggressive. Take some risks. Many, many players, even good players, top players... you can almost see that they don't really believe 100 per cent that they can win," said the Swede.

On the keys of playing well on clay, he added: "You have to have good groundstrokes on both the forehand and backhand. Maybe 20 years ago it was easier to get away with one really good shot and one a bit weaker. You have to be physically and mentally strong, you rally for longer on clay, the matches last longer on average."

Before the French Open, on Federer's comeback to clay, Soderling had said: "I would say not very easy but Roger grew up playing on clay a lot. He’s a good clay courter. But if you haven’t been doing it for three years, it takes a while getting used to."

Soderling last played his official match against David Ferrer in the 2011 Bastad final. He had to retire from tennis due to mononucleosis.
