Mats Wilander believes that Novak Djokovic would have defeated Dominic Thiem in normal conditions. Speaking on Eurosport, the former world No. 1 said: "Obviously if Novak is playing at his very best and conditions were not as terrific as they were, he would have beaten Thiem. But conditions were what they were and Thiem deserved it."

Patrick Mouratoglou added: "He was in the final last year, he beat Rafa on a regular basis every year. He is the second best clay-court player after Rafa."

Wilander also commented about the "middle generation" not being able to breakthrough at a major level: "They have been affected by losing to the three best players so many times in their career that we lost that generation. Mouratoglou concluded: "It's more about the maturity. All the guys are able to do that. Rafa was the last one under 20 years old who won a Grand Slam. It's exceptional. It will definitely happen in the future again, it's more difficult than before because tennis has become so much competition but it's possible."

Djokovic's next tournament is currently Wimbledon. He may take a wild card to Queen's where he lost the last year's final to Marin Cilic wasting match points.
