Former world No. 2 Goran Ivanisevic has confirmed that he is the new coach of world No. 1 Novak Djokovic as the Croatian says being hired by the Serb is a big recognition for him as a coach.
On Sunday afternoon, the pictures of 15-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic being accompanied by 2001 Wimbledon champion Ivanisevic on the practice court surfaced on the internet.
Speaking to Sasa Ozmo of Sport Klub after the practice, the Croatian coach confirmed what many suspected as he told the reporter: "This is a huge recognition for me as a coach because Novak doesn't choose coaches just like that, he needs to see that someone can help him.
"I am delighted that they've chosen me and I am happy that Marian is on board with it. First practice went really well and I hope that our collaboration will last.
"This is sort of 'getting to know,' although we know each other really well. We talked about my perception of his game, some tehnical details. We'll work closely here and then we'll sit down and see what happens next."
Ivanisevic was optimistic that top-seeded Djokovic can defend his Wimbledon title and win his fifth title at The All England Club.
"I am trying to move some of my previous obligations, but I'll probably be able to stay at Wimbledon just for the first week. Novak looks ready, his mind is clear - if everything is OK, I think he has a big chance to defend his title here," Ivanisevic added.
