In a column for El Pais, Rafael Nadal's uncle Toni commented on how having a good attitude can help you to perform well. "It's not few the times where I saw a kid of a good technique playing, of good talent, but I ended up saying: "With this face, it's difficult for him to be a good tennis player". Everything can be improved, from my point of view, including the gesture, passion and attitude; but I think that without those things it's impossible to get to the top of tennis and any sport. I make them see videos of the current great players to the kids we have in the Academy and I asked them to copy them, not only on his shots but also in their attitude when they hit the ball. He has a maximum pressure and he shows he is fully focused.
Sometimes we coaches ask ourselves what's the different quality between kids who get to the Academy. Why someone is able to improve and others do not? Apart from the ability to learn, which is more developed in some of them than others, you have another good thing, which is something more difficult now, it means being able to be careful on a consistent basis. I imagine that the little Novak, Dominic, Roger, Juan Martin and Rafael, about this last one I can guarantee you, were both careful and passionate kids in the tennis sessions with their teachers, focused from the beginning to the end."
Toni is in Mallorca this week working as a Head Director at the Rafa Nadal Academy. We will see if he will head in Paris for a few days for the French Open.
